The Heaphy Track - a great walk there and a great walk back.
The Heaphy Track truly is a great walk, taking you from one coast to another. It meanders through mature Podocarp forest, the natural sub-alpine Gouland Downs, Westcoast Rainforest and finally a wild unmodified coastal landscape.
Most people take three nights for this 80km walk, and return by small plane.
For those with sufficient time, returning on foot via the Leslie Karamea Track and The Tablelands is an experience to be cherished for a life time. It is a physical challenge but not out of the reach of an averagely fit person. The heart of the Karamea River defines the meaning of a pristine wilderness, rainforest river valley.
